Course Handbook Description:
Meets Fine Arts requirement for graduation. Introduces the student to the production, facilities, operations, methods, and techniques used in professional and amateur theatres. A brief summary of the history of the physical stage and its equipment is followed with the fundamentals of the assembly and operation of props, sound, lighting, and scenery. The Bret Harte High School Performing Arts Center will serve as the instructional laboratory for this course. Students will be expected to work outside the school day on student and community productions in order to earn credit in the class.
Course Goal:
Engage students in projects that will encourage creativity, require complex problem solving, and ultimately provide training for employment as a technician in the arts and entertainment industry.
Course Content:
This course will consist of lecture, demonstrations, homework, quizzes, and in-class work. Basic technical theater practices and skills will be taught. Students will be required to obtain access to internet for specific projects. Topics include:
- Production Organization & Management
- Design Process
- The Stage and Its Equipment
- Style, Composition, and Design
- Color
- Lighting Design
- Electrical Theory and Practice
- Lighting Production
- Sound Design and Technology
Notebooks:
All students should create a notebook that will be used exclusively for the technical theater class. This will include documentation of projects, articles, notes and other class related materials.
